John F. Ebersole, LPD, is president of Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y., one of the oldest accredited, private, nonprofit distance education institutions in the country. In his 25 year career in higher education, Dr. Ebersole's personal experience as a post-traditional student has formed his approach to adult education.

Dr. Ebersole has held teaching and management positions at John F. Kennedy University and Boston University, as well as management positions at the University of California – Berkeley and Colorado State University. He developed the "Berkeley Worldwide" international education program; the Colorado State University "CSUN" Network for Learning; and Boston University's "BU Global."

A retired Coast Guard commander and Vietnam veteran, Ebersole began his college education while in the military. In addition to being a graduate of the Naval War College, he earned a doctorate in law and policy from Northeastern University; an EdS from The George Washington University; and master's degrees in both business and public administration from John F. Kennedy University. He has served as a senior fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, where he conducted research into innovation in higher education.

Dr. Ebersole serves as Chairman of the American Association of Community Colleges' Corporate Council. He is a former board member of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (New York). In 2014, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the United States Distance Learning Association.

A former president of the University Professional and Continuing Education Association, Ebersole is co-author (with William Patrick) of Courageous Learning: Finding A New Path Through Higher Education (Hudson Whitman Press, 2011).

Joseph B. Porter

Vice President for Legal and Governmental Affairs and General Counsel

Since August 2005, Joseph Porter has served as Vice President for Legal & Governmental Affairs and General Counsel of Excelsior College. Mr. Porter directs Excelsior's legal operations, participates in the administration of the College as a member of the executive staff and serves as secretary to the Board of Trustees.

Immediately prior to joining Excelsior College, Mr. Porter served in the New York State Education Department for twelve years, first as Deputy Counsel and later as Executive Director of the New York State Office of Teaching. During his years with the Department, Mr. Porter authored innovative regulations and legislation on a wide variety of education issues and led a series of teams responsible for implementing the Regents' education reform agenda. Mr. Porter also served as legal advisor to the Board of Regents' Task Force on Teaching as it drafted groundbreaking reforms of New York's standards for the preparation and certification of teachers.

Prior to his work at the Education Department, Mr. Porter served as Deputy Counsel and Legislative representative of the New York State School Boards Association where he advised and represented over 700 school districts in New York.

Mr. Porter began his career as General Counsel and Legislative Representative for the New York State Conference of Mayors where he advised and represented the mayor's of New York's cities and villages.

A graduate of Albany Law School, Mr. Porter also holds a Bachelor's degree in History and American Studies from Manhattan College in New York City.

Mr. Porter has lectured extensively around New York over the last twenty five years on a wide variety of education issues and served as Adjunct Instructor of Education Law in the Graduate School of Educational Administration of the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York from 1996 to 2010

Terry Conry


Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff (Ret.)

Dr. Conry joined Excelsior College in 2010 as part-time teaching faculty and course designer. He serves on the School of Business & Technology's Faculty Advisory Committee and the IACBE Accreditation Committee. He is also the co-chair of the College's Faculty Steering Committee.

He had a long administrative career at Ohio University, retiring in 2011 as the associate vice president/chief of staff for finance and administration, emeritus. His responsibilities included leading Finance and Administration (a $160M, 880-person organization) toward a Baldrige-based, continuous improvement mode of operations. During his tenure, he led the Facilities Management division, University Human Resources, auxiliary units including Dining Services, Retail Operations, Printing and Graphic Services, and the Airport. He served as a member of the Vision Ohio Strategic Planning Executive Steering Committee and the University's Environmental Scan Team. Since 1987, he has worked as a part-time associate professor of management in the College of Business. In 2011, he returned part-time to lead a project that moved the university to a responsibility centered budget model and restructured administrative services to improve alignment with the academic units.

Conry received the Ohio University Outstanding Administrator Award in 1987 and was honored as an Excelsior College Distinguished Faculty of the Year in 2012.

William Senn

Mr. Senn is responsible for operations and leadership, providing analytic tools and resources that aid in the decision-making process, including business intelligence, data warehousing and academic analytics for the Decision Support Department at the University of North Texas. He is also a teaching/research assistant in its College of Information, Department of Library Science. He is an active participant in the business intelligence and data warehousing communities and has served as an executive board member for the Higher Education Data Warehousing Forum (HEDW) 2009-2011 and has been recognized by IBM for exceptional contributions to the Information Management community with the IBM Information Champion designation in 2010 and 2011.
