Evidence of Student Learning - Internal: How will the program measure what I have learned?

Outcome 1: Uses a holistic approach to design care with clients* experiencing variable and complex health care needs.

Assessment Method: NUR306X, the 4-credit Community Focused Nursing exam focuses on content areas that address health promotion needs and disease prevention strategies for clients* in the community context. Focus areas that relate to a holistic approach to design care for clients include: Content Area V: Community as client and the application of the nursing process. Content Area VI: Roles and strategies for community health nursing. Content Area VII: Common community health issues and specific aggregates.

Results: 28% (42/153) of students achieved a B or better on version CA1 and 16% (21/134) on version DA1 of the Community Focused Nursing examination. While this is improved from last review, the criterion is still not met.

Assessment Method: In NUR442, students are required to submit a final scholarly paper addressing health promotion and disease prevention for a client. The health promotion paper addresses the client's real or perceived health problem or family risk factors. The data used to develop the plan is derived from a comprehensive Health History and Genogram.

Results: 72% (170/235) achieved a grade of "B" or better. The criterion was not met.

Outcome 2: Integrates multiple communication strategies to establish relationships with clients* and health care team members for the provision of safe, quality care.

Assessment Method: In NUR422 Nursing Leadership and Management, students are required to submit an analysis paper involving a communication conflict. A component of the paper includes their assessment of the management strategies and actions they would use to resolve the conflict. In addition, students also discuss the strategies they would use to foster interpersonal/interdisciplinary relationships in order to promote safe, quality patient care.

Results: 80% (172/217) students achieved a grade of "B" or better on a criterion measured in the Communication Conflict assignment. The criterion was met.

Outcome 3: Evaluates data to inform decision making in response to complex situations.

Assessment Method: In NUR430, Research in Nursing, students are required to submit a final paper that involves critiquing a research study. Components of the critique include an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the study and whether the findings of the study contribute to evidence that can be used to guide nursing practice.

Results: 84% of students (150/179) achieved a grade of "B" or better on the Critique of a Research Study assignment. This criterion was met.

Assessment Method: In NUR462 Nursing Capstone, students complete a Health Care Reform Reaction Paper. Components of this paper involves an analysis that includes making determinations about the educational and practice considerations they believe the discipline of nursing needs in order to meet the demands of a health care reform initiative.

Results: 73% (162/211) of students achieved a grade of "B" or better on the Health Care Reform Paper The criterion was not met. Outcome 4: Applies evidence from varied sources to impact quality client outcomes.

Assessment Method: NUR438 Nursing Informatics: students are required to write a scholarly paper assessing a clinical documentation system. Part of this assessment includes an explanation of how the information generated by the clinical documentation system can support and serve as the basis for the development of evidence-based practice standards of care and clinical practice guideline. Students also evaluate the strengths and limitation the clinical documentation system has on promoting quality outcomes.

Results: 78% (356/457) of students achieved a grade of "B" or better on the Nursing Informatics Scholarly Paper assignment rubric criterion. This criterion was not met.

Assessment Method: In NUR442, students are required to submit a final assessment that involves a health promotion and disease prevention paper. A component of the paper includes using the comprehensive health history and genogram data that the student gathers from a client. Once the data is reviewed, the student designs an evidence-based health promotion and disease prevention plan that is based on the client's needs and substantiated by literature.

Results: 80% (200/251) achieved a grade of "B" of better on the Health Promotion Paper. This criterion was met.

Assessment Method: NUR446 Teaching and Learning in a Diverse Society: Students are required to create a culturally competent teaching plan for a group of clients with a shared learning need; integrate multidisciplinary theoretical and research-based knowledge; synthesize assessment data; identify measurable behavioral objectives; teaching methods and teaching tools; and evaluate the teaching and learning experience to determine achievement of behavioral change.

Results: 75% (305/406) students achieved a grade of "B" or better on the Final Teaching Plan assignment. This criterion was not met.

Assessment Method: NUR462: Nursing Capstone: students are required to address a nurse sensitive indicator along with proposing a quality improvement solution. Part of the assignment includes the selection of evidence-based nursing research that can be used to support the proposed quality improvement solution including how the solution will impact quality client outcomes. Results: 87% (187/216) of students achieved a grade of "B" or better on the NUR 462 Case Analysis: A Quality Improvement Initiative. This criterion was met.

Outcome 5: Applies leadership concepts and principles to deliver accessible, cost-effective, safe, quality care in a variety of settings for diverse populations. Assessment Method: NUR462: Nursing Capstone: students select a quality improvement initiative that they believe can be used to improve client outcomes. Part of the assignment relates to a discussion of their role as a nurse leader including the strategies they would use as a change agent to promote and implement the quality improvement initiative.

Results: 90% (194/216) of students achieved the grade of "B" or better on the Quality Improvement project. This criterion was highly achieved.

Assessment Method: NUR 448 Community Health Nursing: students complete a final Vulnerable Population paper. The paper is designed to have students use their knowledge of public health principles in a real community. The student describes the community health nurse's diverse roles in advocating for this vulnerable population on a regional and national level, select two of the following issues: socioeconomic, ethical, legal, political, and regulatory and discuss how they affect the health care needs of this vulnerable population, and discussed the leadership strategies the community health nurse uses to deliver accessible, cost-effective, safe, quality care in addressing this vulnerable population.

Results: 79% (86/109) of students achieved a grade of "B" or better on the final Vulnerable Population paper. This criterion was not met.
