Academic Honors

Excelsior College recognizes the academic achievement of its graduates by designating Academic Honors to students with the following overall GPAs:

Associate Degrees

Honors 3.5 – 3.74
High Honors 3.75 – 3.89
Highest Honors 3.9 and above

Baccalaureate Degrees (Latin Honors)

Cum Laude 3.5 – 3.74
Magna Cum Laude 3.75 – 3.89
Summa Cum Laude 3.9 and above

Beginning with the conferral class of January 2009, associate degree graduates who have earned at least 30 graded credits and baccalaureate graduates who have earned at least 60 graded credits are eligible for Academic Honors designation. All graded credits that are applied toward the degree, including transfer credit will be taken into account when calculating the overall GPA.

A grandfather clause applies for all students who enrolled prior to January 1, 2008, and will remain in effect until the January 2009 conferral class.

These students will follow the policy in effect at the time of their enrollment which requires associate degree graduates to have earned at least 20 graded credits and baccalaureate graduates to have earned at least 30 graded credits in order to be eligible. The GPA standards were unchanged. The February 2009 conferral class will follow the new academic honors criteria.

A second grandfather clause applies to associate students whose degrees were conferred February, March, April, and May, 2009. These students were required to complete 40 graded credits.
