FAQ

What are the requirements for admission to Excelsior College?

Admissions requirements and procedures vary depending on the program. Go to the Getting Started section of our Admissions page, tell us what you’re interested in, and we will display the program specific admission requirements.

Can I transfer in credits from other schools towards my credit requirements?

Yes. Excelsior College reviews credit from degree-granting institutions to determine if those credits will transfer. See the Student Policy Handbook (PDF) for details.

What is an official transcript?

Official transcripts are those that a college, testing agency, or education office sends or gives to you in their sealed envelope, which you then forward unopened to Excelsior College. Transcripts must include the institution’s official seal and registrar’s signature (signature is usually a stamp), two forms of student identification on the transcript, and have an issuance date of six months or less.

Are placement tests required for degree or certificate programs?

No.

Do I have to apply to the College before I can enroll in a program?

Students new to Excelsior must first apply for admission. Excelsior graduates, previously enrolled students, and military service members should contact the College before applying for admission.

How soon can I start after I apply?

You may enroll as soon as you receive an unofficial evaluation (login required) of your application for admission, notifying you of how your prior credits may apply toward a degree.

Can I transfer in credit from foreign institutions?

Yes. Visit our International Student page for details. Academic work completed at institutions outside the United States must be degree-level study undertaken at a university that has been officially recognized as degree or diploma-granting by the regulating agency for higher education in your home country. Your international transcript must be evaluated by an evaluation agency that is approved by Excelsior College and that specializes in the evaluation of such transcripts.

What courses will be considered for evaluation?

Excelsior College accepts credits from a wide variety of sources. In general, Excelsior College accepts credits from those colleges and universities that are regionally accredited, those recognized by the New York State Education Department, and those that have been evaluated by the Excelsior College faculty and found to follow acceptable educational practices and apply toward our degree programs. See Ways to Earn Credit to learn more.

Will Excelsior evaluate an unofficial transcript?

No. Unofficial copies of transcripts will not be evaluated, and submitting them will delay the application process.

What if a school or agency won't send my official transcript directly to me?

Some organizations may not release official transcripts/documents to you. In that case, request that the organization submit your transcripts directly to the Excelsior College Office of Registration and Records:

Office of Registration and Records
7 Columbia Circle
Albany, NY 12203-5159

Can I use exams as credit towards my degree?

Yes. Excelsior College awards examination-related college credit through the following types of exams:

  • Excelsior College Examinations
  • UExcel examinations
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations
  • College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Tests
  • DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)
  • Defense Language Proficiency Tests (DLPT)

  • Other examinations that are recommended for credit by the American Council on Education (ACE)
