American Nuclear Society-Student Section
At Excelsior College
The objective of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Student Section is to promote the advancement of science and engineering relating to nuclear and allied sciences and arts through affiliation with an international organization of nuclear scientists and engineers. Excelsior is the only distance learning institution to host an American Nuclear Society Student Section.
A focus of the ANS Student Section is to increase public awareness of the benefits of nuclear technology and its place in our future. Our Student Section also promotes attendance at national conferences to bring together students from around the country to foster interaction and present information on the latest technology in the field.
We hold virtual meetings quarterly. Log in from home and participate in expert-led chats on topics related to nuclear education, job opportunities, and industry issues. Please see the for our meeting dates. You must be a member of our Student Section to take part.
Alpha Nu Sigma Honor Society
Excelsior also hosts a chapter of the Alpha Nu Sigma Honor Society, an affiliate honor society of the ANS. Membership in Alpha Nu Sigma recognizes the high scholarship, integrity, and potential achievement in the applied nuclear science and nuclear engineering of those outstanding student members of the American Nuclear Society who are inducted into the Society. Members of the honor society are selected from juniors and seniors in the top 40 percent of their class.
Every year students in the Excelsior College BS-Nuclear Engineering Technology degree program are inducted into the College's chapter of the Alpha Nu Sigma nuclear honor society in a ceremony held in Albany during commencement.. We are very proud of these students, whose academic excellence inspires us all to achieve our educational goals.

Join us for a webinar on Fundamentals of Nuclear Criticality Safety presented by Dr. Ron Knief. Registration is not required, but attendance will be recorded.
This presentation will addresses the 1999 event in Tokai-Mura, Japan "the most recent process criticality accident" as a means to familiarize the audience with some of the major features of nuclear criticality safety.
Ronald Allen Knief, PhD, has been studying, teaching, and consulting on nuclear criticality safety of fissionable materials outside of nuclear reactors since he organized the first short course on the subject 40 years ago just now at the University of New Mexico (UNM).
In addition to six years a professor at UNM, Ron spent the decade of the 1980s at Three Mile Island Nuclear Station - another major lessons-learned opportunity. During the last 15 years, he has served Sandia National Laboratories with responsibility for training and certification of nuclear-facility operations personnel and as a nuclear criticality safety engineer.
Ron is a fellow and active member of ANS. He now chairs a technical division having previously done so for two other divisions and two local sections. He is author of an ANS nuclear engineering textbook and editor of books on risk management.
In 2012, Ron received ANS's Robert L. Long award for training excellence. Among other activities, Robert had been an ardent advocate for Excelsior College which has a scholarship in his name. Following his footsteps, Ron is a new member of EC Nuclear Technology Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) having previously served for several years on the Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC).
Dr. Knief is author of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) textbook, Nuclear Criticality Safety: Theory and Practice.
Ron is a graduate of Albion College (MI) and earned the Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
