New York State United Teachers

You may be able to earn up to 15 credits toward your master’s degree through Excelsior College’s partnership with the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Education and Learning Trust .

Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MA-LS) for New York State Teachers

Structured around our flexible, interdisciplinary MA-LS degree program, our partnership with ELT  gives you the opportunity of combining our online course offerings with ELT’s site-based and online courses  to fulfill professional certification requirements for most certificate titles.

How it Works

The MA-LS partnership program requires 33 credits, and you must complete 12 semester hours in the content area of your initial certification. The program is divided into 3 parts or Tiers:
  • Tier I is comprised of 12 credits which introduce you to interdisciplinary study.
  • Tier II requires the completion of 15 credits across two or more disciplines. Here, pending MA-LS advisor approval, you may be able to apply up to 15 credits earned through college courses given by other New York State colleges and offered through NYSUT at a special price for its members. Optionally, you may transfer up to 15 hours of approved graduate credit into the Excelsior College MA in Liberal Studies degree program.
  • Tier III is comprised of a 6 credit thesis.
Please keep in mind that this is not an education degree, although teachers who are required to have a master's degree may find that Excelsior College MA-LS degree will help them achieve their goals. Check with your certifying body or potential employer to find out what their requirements might be.
