Debbie Hatmaker is the executive director (ED) of the American Nurses Association (ANA). As ED, Hatmaker leads the implementation of ANA's strategy and plan to advance the association's comprehensive policy, advocacy and national communications agenda.

Previously, she served as the chief programs officer of the Georgia Nurses Association (GNA). She managed the Southern Performance Assessment Center for Excelsior College's School of Nursing and GNA's continuing education provider/approver units. She also supported GNA's Leadership Development, Legislative/Public Policy, Nursing Practice and Workplace Advocacy programs.

After an early career in public health and maternal-child health, she was on faculty at the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing for 16 years and also practiced as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) and SANE educator. Hatmaker served on the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification task force and item writing committees to create a SANE-A certification examination. She was appointed as the first president of the IAFN-affiliated Forensic Nursing Certification Board.

Additionally, she has served as president of the Georgia Nurses Association and president of the Center for American Nurses. Hatmaker also was the first vice president of ANA. The ANA Board of Directors appointed her president of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), where she served two terms.
She is the recipient of GNA's highest award, the Distinguished Service Award, and the ANA Distinguished Membership Award. She was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2012.
