FAQ
International Students

There are no residency requirements for any Excelsior College students, which makes us an excellent choice for any student living abroad who wants to earn an accredited degree from an American college.

Before Applying or Enrolling as an International Student

English Language Requirement

International applicants from non-English speaking countries must show evidence of sufficient English language proficiency through one of the following options:

  • Submission of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) taken within the last two years
  • Successful completion of Excelsior College® Examinations English Composition exam (ENGx111) or UExcel College Writing exam (ENGx110)
  • Submission of evidence of the successful completion of at least 9 credit hours of academic work in courses delivered in English at an institution of higher education in the United States

Credit Evaluation

We award credit for degree-level coursework completed at a university that has been officially recognized as degree- or diploma-granting by the regulating agency for higher education in your home country. If you have coursework credit from outside the United States, be aware of the following:

  • Excelsior College does not accept official transcripts directly from international institutions unless they are listed in our publication Institutions Outside the United States Whose Transcripts are Accepted Directly (PDF).
  • In all other cases, you must use one of the approved evaluation agencies when submitting transcripts or credentials from countries outside the United States.
  • No coursework from a hospital or diploma school of nursing will be considered, regardless of whether it was completed through an approved university or university-parallel institution.

Evaluation Agencies

The approved agencies below use different approaches to evaluate international credentials. Investigate which is best suited to your particular needs by reviewing the agencies’ practices and by speaking to an agency representative before making a commitment. Once an evaluation is prepared and accepted in transfer here at Excelsior College, we cannot accept an evaluation from another agency for the same credit.
