Shortened Excelsior College® Examinations (ECEs) Announced

Shortened versions of credit-bearing ECEs and their practice exams offer the same high-quality exam experience and related resources at reduced cost. 

Review the important details about registration deadline for these exams and what to do if you have already registered for one of these exams.

Reduced Length for 5 Exams

Beginning December 3, 2012, the testing time for these ECEs will be reduced from 3 hours to 2 hours in length:

  • Earth Science
  • Introduction to Music
  • Introduction to Philosophy
  • Juvenile Delinquency
  • World Conflicts Since 1900

Registration and eligibility deadlines: The last date to register for the 3-hour version of the above ECEs will be December 2, 2012.  Eligibility for the 3-hour version of these exams ends on June 2, 2013.

Lower Costs for Exams and Practice Exams

  • The cost of each 2-hour exam will be $95.
  • The cost for the corresponding practice exams will be $25.

Each practice exam consists of two pairs of two forms of each shortened practice exam.  Practice exams are delivered online and each form must be completed in 1 hour.

Already Registered for One of These 3-Hour Exams?

If you are currently registered to take the 3-hour version of any of the above listed exams, you have three options:

  • Complete the 3-hour version.
  • Switch to the 2-hour version of an exam through your MyExcelsior Message Center (login required) within the 30-days window beginning December 3, 2012 and no later than January 3, 2013.
  • Cancel the 3-hour version (without switching to the 2-hour) through your MyExcelsior Message Center (login reqired) also within the 30-days window beginning December 3, 2012 and no later than January 3, 2013. The standard 50% refund policy will apply in these instances. 

Note: If you do not take the 3-hour version of the examination you are registered for by its eligibility end date and you have not requested a refund within 7 calendar days after your eligibility end date, you will lose your entire exam fee.

Already Registered for the 2-Hour Practice Exam?

If you are currently registered to take the 2-hour version of a practice exam for a 3-hour version of the credit-bearing examination, you may:

  • Take the 2-hour version of the practice exam anyway
  • Register for the 1-hour version of the practice exam before requesting a refund for the 2-hour version.
