Time Limit for Degree Completion

Statement of Policy

Excelsior College degree programs are designed to be completed at your own pace. However, we want to encourage students to make continuous progress toward their academic goals. Students will be academically dismissed if they do not complete their program within the published program time limits (See also Requirements for Credit Accumulation.)

Time Limits

School of Business and Technology, School of Health Sciences, School of Liberal Arts, and School of Public Service

This time limit on enrollment is NOT cumulative if enrollment is not continuous for the following programs:

Master of Business Administration 10 years
Master of Science in Cybersecurity   5 years
Master of Health Science     7 years
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies     6 years
Master of Science in Criminal Justice     6 years
Certificate in Homeland Security     3 years

The time clock on enrollment will reset anytime a student re-enrolls.

Time Limit Request for Extensions 

Students in the School of Business and Technology, School of Health Sciences, School of Liberal Arts and School of Public Service may seek an extension of the time limit. To request an extension, students must submit a request in writing via email or message center outlining why the extension is warranted and their plans to make complete their degree programs. Extensions are granted at the discretion of the dean/designee.

School of Nursing

The time limit on enrollment is cumulative if enrollment is not continuous for the following programs:

Associate in Applied Science (Nursing)   7 years
Associate in Science (Nursing)   7 years
Bachelor of Science (Nursing)   7 years
RN-MS (Nursing) 12 years
Master of Science (Nursing)   7 years

The time clock on enrollment will not reset when the student re-enrolls. Students will have the balance of time remaining upon re-enrollment. (i.e. if student withdraws after 3 years in the Associate in Science (Nursing) degree and re-enrolls after 1 year, they will have 4 years remaining to complete the program).

Exceptions:

  • Associate Degree nursing students enrolled prior to September 1, 2001, are required to complete all degree requirements within a seven-year period of enrollment.
  • Bachelor of Science in nursing students enrolled prior to September 1, 2001 but before July 1, 2008, are required to complete all degree requirements within a ten-year period of enrollment. January 1, 2005 the BS in nursing program implemented significant changes to the degree. Students were granted an additional ten-year period of enrollment starting January 1, 2005.
  • RN - MS in nursing students enrolled prior to September 1, 2001 but before July 1, 2008, are required to complete all degree requirements within a twelve-year period of enrollment. January 1, 2005 the RN-MS in nursing program implemented significant changes to the degree. Students were granted an additional twelve-year period of enrollment starting January 1, 2005.

Note: The time limit will be reviewed for all nursing students re-enrolling in a program. The time frame for completion will be determined based on progress toward program completion at the time of withdrawal and the curriculum requirements in place at the time of re-enrollment.
