Web Browser Settings

Properly configuring your web browser may solve some problems with accessing our web site or learning management system.

Note: Excelsior College recommends having at least two (2) web browsers installed on one's computer. The second web browser is to provide you with access to our website and services in case you are experiencing issues with your primary web browser.

Select the browser(s) you use below and review instructions for setting their optimal configuration when using our resources and services.

Please note that the instructions below include configuring browser's built in pop-up blocker. If you have separate pop-up blocking software installed on your computer, please refer to that pop-up blocker's instructions below to find out how to manually enable pop-ups for our website excelsior.edu.

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter T to view the Tools menu of Internet Explorer (ALT + T)
  3. In the Tools, select Pop-up Blocker sub-menu, then click Pop-up Blocker settings
  4. In the "Address of website to allow" field, type excelsior.edu
  5. Click Add
  6. Click Close

  2. Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter T to view Tools menu of Internet Explorer (ALT + T)
  3. Select Delete browsing history…
  4. Uncheck all the options in the "Delete Browsing History" window except the following:
    • Temporary Internet Files (and website files)
    • Cookies (and website data)
  5. Click Delete
  6. Once the message prompt below appears, close all Internet Explorer windows
  7. Re-open Internet Explorer and log into MyExcelsior

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter T to view the Tools menu of Internet Explorer (ALT + T)
  3. Select Internet Options
  4. In the "Browsing history" section, select Settings
  5. In the "Temporary Internet Files and History Settings" window, select Every time I visit the webpage under "Check for newer versions of stored pages"
  6. Click OK
  7. In the "Internet Options" window, click on the Security tab
  8. Select the Internet zone
  9. Click Default level and set the slider to Medium-high
  10. Click on Custom level…
  11. Scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section
  12. Set the "Display mixed content" to Enable
  13. Scroll down to the "Scripting" section
  14. Set the "Allow Programmatic clipboard access" to Enable
  15. Click OK in the "Security Settings – Internet Zone" window
  16. Click on the Privacy tab in the "Internet Options" window
  17. Under the Settings area make sure that the slider setting is no higher than Medium High
  18. Click OK to save your settings and to exit "Internet Options"
  19. Close all open Internet Explorer windows
  20. Re-open Internet Explorer and log into MyExcelsior
  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter V to view the View menu of Internet Explorer (ALT + V)
  3. Find the Zoom option. Zoom In or Zoom Out.
  4. Repeat as needed

Note: Setting the zoom too high may prevent you from accessing all of the features of some tools on our website.

  1. Open Chrome
    • Windows computers
      • Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter F to view the Chrome Options Menu (ALT + F)
      • Click on Settings
    • Macintosh computers
      • Click on the Chrome menu in the upper left corner of the screen
      • Click on Preferences
  2. The Settings tab in Chrome will load, scroll down and click on Show advanced settings…
  3. In the "Privacy" section, click on Content settings…
  4. In the "Content Settings" window, scroll down to the pop-up section, click on Manage exceptions…
  5. In the "Pop-up exceptions" window, type excelsior.edu in the "Hostname pattern" field. In the "Behavior" field, select Allow
  6. Click on Done
  7. Click on Done
  8. Close all Chrome windows
  1. Open Chrome
    • Windows computers
      • Press and hold the CTRL key on your keyboard and the letter H to open the History tab in Chrome (CTRL + H)
      • Click on Clear Browsing Data…
    • Macintosh computers
      • Click on the Chrome menu in the upper left corner of the screen
      • Click on Clear Browsing Data…
  2. In the "Clear browsing data" window, select the beginning to time from the dropdown menu
  3. Uncheck all the options except the following:
    • Delete cookies and other site and plug-in data
    • Empty the cache
  4. Click on Clear browsing data
  5. Close all Chrome windows
  6. Re-open Chrome and log into MyExcelsior

Windows computers

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter F to view the Chrome Options Menu (ALT + F)
  3. In the Options Menu, adjust the Zoom as desired. The minus button (-) zooms out, the plus (+) zooms in

Macintosh computers

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Click on the View menu from the top of the screen
  3. In the View menu, click on Zoom In to make the text larger, click on Zoom Out to make the text smaller

  1. Open Firefox
    • Windows computers
      • Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter T to view the Tools menu of Firefox (ALT + T)
      • Click on Options
    • Macintosh computers
      • Click on the Firefox menu in the upper left corner of the screen
      • Click on Preferences
  2. In the Options window, select the Content tab
  3. Under "Block pop-up windows," click on Exceptions
  4. In the "Address of website" field, type excelsior.edu
  5. Click Allow
  6. Click Close
  7. Click OK
  1. Open Firefox
    • Windows computers
      • Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter S to view the History menu of Firefox (ALT + S)
    • Macintosh computers
      • Click on the History menu at the top of the screen
  2. In the History menu, select Clear Recent History…
  3. In the "Clear History" window, change the "Time range to clear:" to Everything
  4. Under the "Details" section, uncheck all the options except the following:
    • Cookies
    • Cache
  5. Close the "Clear History" window
    • For Windows computers, click OK
    • For Macintosh computers, click Clear Now
  6. Close all Firefox windows
  7. Re-open Firefox and log into MyExcelsior
  1. Open Firefox
  2. Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter T to view the Tools menu of Firefox (ALT + T)
  3. Click on Options
  4. In the Options window, select the Applications tab
  5. Scroll down the "Applications" tab and locate Portable Document Format (PDF)
  6. Set the Action for "Portable Document Format (PDF)" to Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)
  7. Click OK to close the "Options" window
  1. Open Firefox
    • Windows computers
      • Press and hold the ALT key on your keyboard and the letter V to view the View menu of Firefox (ALT + V)
    • Macintosh computers
      • Click on the View menu at the top of the screen
  2. In the View menu, find the Zoom option. Zoom In or Zoom Out to increase or decrease the text size
  3. Repeat as needed

Note: Setting the zoom too high may prevent you from accessing all of the features of some tools on our website.

Note: Excelsior College only supports the use of the Safari web browser on a Macintosh computer.

Note: Currently, there is no way to allow pop-ups to particular websites in Safari. The pop-up blocker can only be turned on or turned off. In order to be able to view all the pages and content on our website, the pop-up blocker in Safari must be disabled. Please use caution when disabling the pop-up blocker in Safari. In most cases the pop-up blocker can be left enabled (this is the default setting in Safari). If pages on our website are not loading, please follow the instructions below to disable the pop-up blocker.

  1. Open Safari
  2. Click on the Safari menu in the upper left corner of the screen
  3. Click on Preferences
  4. Click on the Security tab
  5. Uncheck the Block pop-up windows option
  6. Close the Preferences window
  1. Open Safari
  2. Click on the Safari menu in the upper left corner of the screen
  3. Click on Reset Safari
  4. Clear the cache and cookies
    • For Safari 6.x
      • Uncheck all options in the "Reset Safari" window, except the following:
        • Remove all website data
        • Close all Safari windows
    • For Safari 5.x
      • Uncheck all options in the "Reset Safari" window, except the following:
        • Empty the cache
        • Remove all cookies
        • Close all Safari windows
  5. Click the Reset button
  6. Navigate back to www.excelsior.edu and log into MyExcelsior

  2. Click on the View menu from the top of the screen
  3. In the View menu, click on Zoom In to make the text larger, click on Zoom Out to make the text smaller
