Alumni Speaker Series

Are you an expert on a topic that you think might be of interest to Excelsior students and/or alumni? If so, you may be a candidate for the Alumni Speaker Series.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

Q: How is the series presented?
A: The Alumni Speaker Series is presented as a Web chat broadcast in the College’s alumni chat room.

Q: Are presentations live or recorded?
A: Presentations are live, but are recorded. Archived on the College’s Web site, they are available thereafter for those unable to attend the live chat.

Q: Do I need a Web cam to be a speaker?
A: No, most presentations are audio only. The visual portion consists of the speaker’s PowerPoint presentation.

Q: Does the College provide technical support?
A: Yes, Excelsior’s Online Education Technologists will provide assistance in broadcasting from your home or office.

Q: What topics are appropriate?
A: Topics should be generally suited to Excelsior students and alumni such as

Q: What is the time commitment?
A: Web chats are one-hour long, including time for questions and answers. A brief telephone conversation with one of our Online Education Technologists is required to determine whether you have the appropriate hardware and software to conduct the chat. Additional time required for preparation of the topic materials depends on the individual. We provide a PowerPoint template and ask that speakers submit their completed PowerPoint presentations for uploading to the chat room one week in advance of their chat date.

Q: Am I responsible for getting people to attend my Web chat?
A: No, the College announces the Alumni Speaker Series on its Web site and Facebook page, in the monthly Alumni Newsletter, and in the College’s magazine, Live & Learn. We also send a broadcast email invitation to more than 60,000 students and alumni.

Q: How do I submit my topic?
A: Email Renee Kelly, alumni affairs and annual campaign manager, at rkelly@excelsior.edu with the following information:

  1. Your full name, graduation year, and daytime phone number
  2. A synopsis of the topic that you would like to present
  3. A statement of why you think Excelsior students and alumni would be interested in this topic
