Tina Aown, RN, of Boyne City, Michigan, was awarded a Master of Science degree in nursing in December 2009, graduating with a grade point average of 4.0. Ms. Aown has a long history with Excelsior College, having obtained her Associate in Science degree in nursing in 1986, before going on to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University.
Aown praised her experience at Excelsior saying, “It provided me a high quality education with an accredited program while also recognizing my experience and previous education. I could focus on what I needed to learn; every course I took was relevant and challenged me to grow professionally.” While working full-time and raising four children, she found the Excelsior College faculty and staff helped her to maintain her strong desire to learn and her motivation to excel.
Currently using her knowledge and experience in myriad roles, Aown has been appointed to the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center (ANCC) Content Expert Panel for psychiatric and mental health nursing certification and to the American Psychiatric Nurses Association’s national conference planning committee. She achieved certification through the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) as a certified nurse manager leader and is taking on increased leadership roles in her primary job as well as additional responsibilities as adjunct faculty and a consultant. Says Aown, “Although I have been a nurse for 24 years now, I feel that as a result of earning my Master of Science degree in nursing, I have a new career in the field that I love. I thank you for this. I feel proud and humbled to be an Excelsior graduate.”
