Rachel Berger of Lakewood, New Jersey, graduated August 2009 with a 3.91 grade point average. She completed her degree within two years, using transfer credit and Excelsior College and CLEP examinations. Berger noted that pursuing a degree with a family of eight was definitely challenging; while attending Excelsior College, her children ranged in age from four to twenty-one years old!
Among the many challenges Berger faced when she made the decision to return to college were the changes in technology. Another obstacle she confronted was learning the appropriate style of writing, since it had been over twenty year since she had taken a writing course. Yet, when Berger took the College Writing exam, she received an A, success she credits to the “My Access” writing tutorial.
Currently a full-time student at Monmouth University’s School of Social Work program in Long Branch, New Jersey, she hopes to complete a Master’s of Social Work degree in 2011. Berger offers, “Excelsior College has afforded me the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate degree in a timely fashion without compromising my family obligations, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”
