Janet L. Ivers

Term:   2013-2016
Degrees:   AS in nursing '05, MS in nursing '11
Home:   Libby, MT

After earning her first degree from a traditional college, Jan enrolled at Excelsior to earn an associate degree and then a master's degree in nursing. She has found volunteerism to be a vital component of a society. Her community service spans from her work as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician in Montana, to Zaire, Africa where she taught secondary science as a Peace Corps volunteer. She has also served as a director on community boards, including the local credit union and Habitat for Humanity.

A life-long resident of Montana, where there is limited access to higher education in rural remote locations, Jan has a particular interest in the unique challenges faced by non-traditional learners in isolated areas. Like many Excelsior students, Jan took several years to complete her associate degree while raising a family, but she was able to satisfy her quest for knowledge through Excelsior's distance learning model.

She is currently employed as a registered nurse at a frontier (fewer than 25 beds) hospital.
