Letter From the Provost

An Open Letter from the Provost

My heart goes out to each of you who has experienced suffering and loss in the wake of the catastrophic flooding in southeast Texas and Louisiana. The loss of life and destruction brought on by Hurricane Harvey is overwhelming. Although those of us living in other parts of the country can only imagine what you are going through, the images on the news have affected us deeply.

Unfortunately, more danger is on the horizon. A second major hurricane, Irma, has hit the Caribbean, and is anticipated to make landfall in Florida by this weekend.

My message to you during this difficult time is one of support and encouragement. You are part of the Excelsior College community and we care deeply about what happens to you. Right now, your well-being and the well-being of family and friends is the main concern. Please stay safe. However, when this crisis passes and you are ready to return to your classes, we will be here to help you. Stay in touch and let us know if you need our assistance to get started or to resolve any issues.

In the midst of so much darkness, the best of humanity has been on display with countless stories of survival, courage, resilience, and sacrifice. Let us learn from these examples. Moments like this provide hope that we can work together to create a better future for ourselves and for others. Your dream of a college degree cannot be lost. We will work together to make it happen.

Ever upward,

Deborah Sopczyk
Provost, Excelsior College
