College Choice for Adults (Transparency by Design)

Excelsior College is the founder and a member of The Presidents’ Forum, a consortium of regionally accredited, adult-serving, distance-learning colleges and universities. In a project called Transparency by Design, consortium members have joined together in an effort to provide information that will help consumers make informed decisions about their educational investment. Through College Choices for Adults (Transparency by Design), member institutions present data about items such as student and alumni satisfaction, student engagement, and the costs of a degree program. A key feature of College Choices for Adults is the availability of this information at the degree program level.

Using the links below to individual Excelsior programs you will find answers to questions about them that are important in deciding which degree program best fits your needs. You’ll find out how much the program costs, what you will learn, how to transfer in college credit from other sources and how you can complete degree requirements.
In this manner, you will be better informed when making one of the most important decisions of a lifetime - which degree program is best suited to your needs and circumstances.

A Word About Data Comparisons

A central element in College Choices for Adults is the reporting of institution data from tests and surveys conducted nationwide among college students and alumni. These include a test of general education skills including critical thinking, reading, writing and math; a survey indicating the level at which students are engaged in the learning process; and a survey on the degree to which students are satisfied with their educational experiences.
Regarding the national surveys in particular, many of the questions pertain to experiences at traditional institutions such as those relating to on-campus facilities. Thus, only those items that have the greatest relevance to distance and online colleges are included.  At the College Choices for Adults site, the one survey for which information is currently provided for all participating institutions is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The results of this survey provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.
In the charts below, provided in PDF format, results gathered from Excelsior’s students is shown in comparison with all students nationwide. Keep in mind that the national data reflects the opinions of students from institutions of all types and sizes, campus-based and distance-learning, and both traditional aged and nontraditional students. Excelsior’s students are primarily working adults pursuing their degrees on a part-time basis.  Using the information at the College Choices for Adults site in conjunction with the information presented here will help you make an informed consumer decision regarding your college and program selections.
