Albany, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2011) - As the federal government struggles to balance national security and federal fiscal challenges, the Excelsior College 40th Anniversary Speaker Series hosts a talk by Dr. Lawrence Korb, a nationally recognized foreign policy expert and former assistant secretary of defense. Korb is now a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.
In addition to his decades of expertise in foreign policy and national security issues, Dr. Korb is a media commentator and a prolific writer of books, articles and op-ed columns on matters of national security, foreign policy and veterans affairs.
"Dr. Korb’s ongoing work to raise awareness of national security and foreign policy issues reflects Excelsior’s ongoing commitment to lifelong learning," said Cathy S. Kushner, vice president for Institutional Advancement at Excelsior College. "His work takes on special meaning for Excelsior, since nearly 14,000 of our students are members of the military and veterans."
He was previously a senior fellow and director of National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, director of the Center for Public Policy Education, and a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution. From 1981-1985, he was assistant secretary of defense. Dr. Korb holds a PhD in political science from the State University of New York at Albany, is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, and has held a series of faculty positions at other institutions as well.
