Teaching English Language Learners How to Learn

Professor Howard Pomann, Director of the Institute for Intensive English at Union County College in Cranford, N.J., will give the keynote address at the launch of Excelsior College’s English as a Second Language Writing Online Workshop (ESL-WOW) on November 5.
Pomann’s presentation, “Teaching English Language Learners How to Learn” will begin at 12 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. It will focus on the increasing challenge faced by instructors and their students in using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in ways that are effective for achieving language objectives.
Specifically, Pomann will discuss a learner training model that focuses on technical, strategic and pedagogical training.
Prof. Pomann has extensive experience in the areas of curriculum development, teacher training and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). He has directed several grants and given numerous presentations on the integration of CALL into the ESL curriculum and CALL learner training. His publications include several ESL textbooks and ESL software.
The keynote address will be broadcast on the web for free to those who register.
ESL-WOW is an online multimedia program designed to guide non-native speakers of English through each stage of the pre-writing, while-writing, and post-writing processes. It is funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) of the U.S. Department of Education.
