Sociologist Dr. Christopher Davidson, an adjunct instructor at Excelsior College, joins the podcast to discuss Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and what role, if any, they can or should play in higher education. Dr. Davidson argues that the reality of MOOCs is differs from how they are portrayed by the mainstream media and advocates.

Empowering People to Protect Their Online Privacy

Each year web attacks costs businesses $114 billion annually, with cyber-attackers targeting weaknesses in not only technologies but people and procedures. With more than two billion users expected to access the internet in 2013, the proliferation of these attacks will only continue to increase.

In 2008, the National Cyber Security Alliance launched Data Privacy Day in the United States and Canada to raise awareness of this very issue and to empower people to protect their privacy and control their digital footprint. It marked the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data collection.

Five years later, the need for Data Privacy Day has only grown in importance, especially with an anticipated shortfall of between 20,000 and 40,000 cybersecurity professionals. In fact, the 22 percent growth in demand for cybersecurity professionals through 2020 is one of the driving factors behind Excelsior’s development of cybersecurity

This was one on the reasons Excelsior College invited the FBI Cyber Unit and InfraGard, a partnership between the FBT and the private sector focused on information and intelligence sharing, onto campus Monday for a public information session. The purpose of the event was to increase awareness of the need to protect personal and corporate, public and private information that relies upon electronic (cyber) storage and dissemination.
