Why Do I Need a Study Plan?
A study plan is a chart or schedule that allows you to block out the time needed each day for well-defined learning activities, goals, and routine daily tasks.

A study plan is important because, as an independent student, you assume responsibility for your learning and study experience. A good personal study plan will help you use your time wisely and, if followed, it will ensure that you meet all of your deadlines and have adequate time allotted to study, review, and prepare for an examination.

Creating a Study Plan

Before you can create your personal study plan you will need to know how you currently spend your time. Then you will be able to integrate your activities and your study requirements.

Try using a time-use chart (PDF) to record your daily activities over a one-week period. Record how much time you spend eating, sleeping, commuting, working, watching television, caring for your children, reading—everything. When you have finished recording your activities, you will be ready to schedule your study periods.

Note: The following sample time-use chart shows 14 hours of scheduled study; but you should assess whether you need less, or more, study time.
