Our Veteran Mentorship Program
Nothing is more important for online college success then becoming acclimated to distance learning and knowledge of available student support. Excelsior's mentorship program offers new Military Affiliated Community Students (MACS)* the opportunity to be matched to a successful MACS mentor to help navigate the online classroom environment and provide assistance in locating support and resources.
*Military Affiliated Community Students (MACS) include: military, veteran, guard, reserve, DoD civilians, and their spouses.
About the program
Coordinated by the Veteran Services Office, part of the Center for Military Education of Excelsior College, the program connects newly enrolled MACS with currently enrolled senior level MACS students or alumnus. The program allows new students to realize greater success through camaraderie. At the conclusion of the program, mentors and mentees may find that the learning has been mutual and that the relationship has grown in ways not originally foreseen in the beginning.
As a mentor, you will help to ease another MACS's transition to the online learning environment and provide encouragement and tips on how to be successful. You need to be an Excelsior College student or alumni, have a 3.0 - 4.0 GPA, and willing to commit time to conversing with a new military affiliated community student.
In order to establish a successful relationship, mentors and mentees must be:
- receptive to guidance and suggestions
- open and honest with each other
- supportive of each other
- positive in attitude
