TEAS Requirement Details

The Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Test of Essential Academic Skills, or TEAS, measures basic essential skills in reading, mathematics, science, English, and language usage. The test is designed specifically to assess a student’s preparedness for entering the health science fields and is an entrance requirement for many U.S. nursing degree programs. Studies show a consistent link between a student’s performance on the TEAS and future academic success. Before you apply to Excelsior’s associate degree in nursing program, you must complete the TEAS with the minimum scores outlined below within one year prior to the date of your application.

The TEAS is an important first step on the path to your nursing degree, but don’t let it intimidate you. Most students achieve the score requirements on their first attempt, and Excelsior is here to support you every step of the way with resources designed to help you succeed.

Prep Resources

There are many ways to prepare for the TEAS, but Excelsior suggests that students use materials available from ATI, the developers and providers of the TEAS exam. Follow the links below to view sample test questions and a content outline as well as free online courses to help you study.

Registration Instructions

When you register for the TEAS, you must provide ATI with information to match your TEAS transcript with your Excelsior University student record. Be aware that your TEAS will not be accepted without these two forms of identification:

  • Your date of birth (MM/DD)
  • The same email address you provided to Excelsior University

The below instructions will walk you through:

  1. How to Register for and Take the TEAS—IMPORTANT: Make sure your ATI account is registered to Excelsior University
  2. How to purchase a transcript from ATI

In a single attempt, you must complete Reading, Mathematics, Science and English and earn a minimum composite score of 58.7%. TEAS scores are only valid if taken no more than one year prior to the date of your application. In addition, you may only test twice in a calendar year (January–December). Do not submit your application to Excelsior University until you have achieved the required admission scores on the TEAS. If you have any questions, please contact our admissions office at 888-647-2388.
