Excelsior College DC Center hosts student veteran event

Excelsior College will host a student veteran event and book signing at its DC Center, located at 2000 M Street NW, on Monday, March 21, from 4 pm to 6 pm EST.

Tammi Lambert, executive director of the Mayor’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs in Washington DC, and Victoria Pridemore, vice chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Board on Veterans Affairs, will offer introductory remarks and Darren Phelps, vice president for outreach at the Student Veterans of America will also be on hand. David Chrisinger, a veteran communication specialist and editor of See Me for Who I Am: Student Veterans’ Stories of War and Coming Home, will lead a discussion of the book and sign copies.

Written for both veterans and civilians, See Me for Who I Am illustrates service members’ shared experiences, explains the fulfillment of combat, and describes what going to war really entails. The contributions by the student/veterans challenge stereotypes and help to create dimensionality beyond news headlines of veterans as “heroes” or “monsters.”

Chrisinger is an instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and teaches a popular course called “Back from the Front: Transitioning from the Military to Civilian Life” which the book is based on. The unique course, featured in USA Today College in November 2014, helps new student veterans create a support network and learn skills necessary for college success.

The event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is requested. Books will be available for sale.
