Deshaw dropped out of high school in 10th grade. Until pursuing her degree, she had always worked for a police department; she married her best friend and had three children. At 29 weeks pregnant with her third child, she ended up losing her job due to having to stay home and care for her husband, who had been injured in a chemical fire explosion. Deshaw decided to try college at 31 years old, took it one step at a time, and now celebrates earning her degree.
