What is the Community-Focused Nursing Exam?

The exam measures knowledge and understanding of community-focused nursing expected of the registered nurse who is transitioning to baccalaureate-level practice. The concept of client is expanded to include families, aggregates, and communities within the context of a complex and dynamic environment. Principles of epidemiology, demography, environmental sciences, and political organizations are integrated with nursing concepts and principles to provide a basis for community nursing practice. The exam requires analysis and application of selected theories and health promotion/protection and disease prevention strategies. It focuses on the synthesis of population-based health and public health concepts to promote, maintain, and restore health of families, aggregates, and communities. Knowledge from practice and readings is used to operationalize the core concepts of critical thinking, communication, research, role development, caring, and cultural competency.
How many questions are there and what is the pass rate for this exam?

The exam has 130 multiple-choice questions and the pass rate is 89%.
What books are required in preparation for this exam?

The recommended books for general information on community health nursing are Community Health Nursing: Advocacy for Population Health (5th ed.) by M. J. Clark and Health Promotion Throughout the Life Span (7th ed.)by C. Edleman & C. Mandle.

The recommended sources for epidemiology and environmental health are Public Health Nursing :Population-centered Health Care in the Community (7th ed.) by M. Stanhope & J. Lancaster, the article Epidemiology basics for occupational health nurses by E. What is the average time it takes to prepare for the exam?

It is suggested that you take at least two to three months to prepare for the test.

What is the best way to prepare for the exam?

Use the content outline in the content guide to guide you in reading the required books. As you read take notes then use the notes to study from. Make sure you understand the broad concepts as outlined in the guide, then think about the ways to apply the concepts to use with your knowledge of practice, and application in community-based practice. Learning the broad concepts and ways they are applied are more beneficial than trying to memorize individual facts or data.

It is best to break the content into chunks of information, similar to if you were taking a traditional class in the subject matter. Some students have found it helpful to place the page numbers of the text right next to the content in the guide, so when they begin reviewing the material it is easier to find it in the textbook.

Why should I consider taking a practice exam?

The practice exam gives you a sense of what the exam for credit will be like. Reasons for taking the practice exam include: sample questions used in the credit-bearing exam, honing your testing skills, practice testing in a timed environment, gain valuable feedback by reviewing the rationales for the practice test answers, gain confidence in taking exams via computer, and increasing your chances for a better grade.

Do you have to take the provided practice exam to get a good grade?

It is very helpful to do the practice exams because it gives you a better idea of what the test questions might be and how Excelsior College writes questions. Practice exams also give you an idea of where you need to focus your studying.

Does the practice exam accurately predict how you will do on the actual test?

The Test Administration staff reports that a score of 80% or better indicates you are prepared to take the exam and be successful.

Is there a practice exam for this credit-bearing exam?

Yes, you can register for the practice exam at the same time that you are registering for the actual exam. The practice exam set consists of two different 50-item tests and the cost is $75.00.

Is the community_focused nursing global or confined to suggested populated areas?

It is confined to the information presented in the outline and Healthy People 2010 though, Healthy People 2020 is now available

Can I use study material that has not been provided by Excelsior College in preparing for the exam?

It is not advisable to use study material not recommended or developed by Excelsior College (from sources such as Rue, Moore, College Network) when preparing for the written exam. It is possible to use a different textbook to assist you in obtaining a better understanding of the material.

Is one area of the exam content weighted heavier than another?

No, but each content area within the exam is covered based on an assigned percentage. This information can be found on page 6 of the content guide for this exam.

Do you think completing the questions at the end of the chapter will help?

Everything you can do to broaden your knowledge base and get more comfortable answering questions is useful.

What is the difference between Public Health Nurse and Community Health Nurse?

A Public Health Nurse often refers to those employed in official government health agencies. A Community Health nurses focus on the health needs and issues of the community.

What is the primary care listed for chronic illness and personal effects and community effects that exist?

Chapter 29 in the text addresses chronic health problems and related psychological care.

Is it true that chronic illness and psychological illness can be exacerbated by each other?

Psychological adjustments lie in the main area of self esteem and self image, of course, these two areas of illness and related concerns overlap and can exacerbate. For example, a person diagnosed with diabetes might begin to feel depressed about the chronic condition and stops following the required diabetic diet.
