This team member will provide information and guidance to students once they are enrolled. They will be trained in Excelsior Requirements for degree completion and assist students in persisting and completing their course of study. They will implement a coaching and mentoring model, proactively contacting students and remaining in touch to ensure they are on track and are not overwhelmed or meeting challenges that could jeopardize successful program progress.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Cultivate strong working partnerships with assigned Adelante! students; approach them as individual stories requiring personalized time and attention
  • Customize support through the delivery method(s) most helpful to each student, including but not limited to video conference, text messaging, chat, phone, e-mail
  • Assist Adelante! students in assessing goals and objectives; help them to develop an educational plan for successful completion of degree or certificate
  • Guide Adelante! students in course/exam selection and scheduling; assist in resolving academic problems; identify and monitor academic progress
  • Conduct proactive outreach to Adelante! students who are exhibiting behaviors that put them at risk for academic failure or drop out; provide coaching to assess the challenges behind the at-risk behaviors and identify a plan for remediation and follow up; provide moral support and confidence-building assistance
  • Assess appropriate courses of action consistent with the individual student’s goals and circumstances; serve as the liaison between—and translator for—Adelante! and College support offices including but not limited to Accessibility Services, Career Readiness, Financial Aid, and Writing Center
  • Serves as a member of the dedicated Adelante! student support team in partnership with part-time Adelante! Admissions and Financial Aid counselors; support team members serve as back-up for each other when one of them is unavailable to speak with students
  • Assist in the development and coordination of Adelante! student programming and events including but not limited to recruitment events, orientation modules, success- and support-related webinars, engagement activities
  • Interpret and provide timely, accurate information about College policies and procedures and curriculum to students, faculty, staff, and other constituents
  • Prepare various letters and other communications in support of student progress and success
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities to ensure an extraordinary Adelante! student experience
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the following areas of study: academic advising, counseling, higher education, student affairs or a related field
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working in a college/university setting with Latino and Hispanic adult learners; experience advising in an online education setting preferred
  • Will consider applicants with Bachelor’s degree who have completed some graduate level course work and five years of commensurate experience as outlined above
  • Fluency in Spanish and English (speaking and writing)
  • Deep understanding of Latino and Hispanic cultures and best practices in the advising methods for this population
  • Solid understanding of the characteristics and challenges of Latino and Hispanic adult learners and online learners Strong interpersonal skills and relationship building; genuine passion for helping people to better themselves through education; coaching for success mindset
  • Ability to interpret and communicate fluently (both orally and in writing, in both Spanish and English) complex processes and policies clearly and in a manner easy to understand by an audience unfamiliar with academic and internal College language; ability to craft written communications with a level of spelling, grammar, and organization befitting a representative of an institution of higher education
  • Strong analytical, judgment, and problem-solving skills; ability to incorporate new facts and ideas into group processes and apply creative thinking to develop new solutions
  • Ability to keenly assess and anticipate student needs, providing proactive, not reactive, service
  • Ability to work accurately, efficiently, and to successfully balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions; meet all academic and administrative deadlines
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and other constituents from diverse backgrounds and with diverse needs
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office, Outlook, student information systems, CRM systems (such as Salesforce), video-conferencing software; agility to learn new and emerging student-service platforms and software
  • This is a part-time position with some flexibility in hours to meet the needs of Adelante! student schedules.
