Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for Prior Learning Assessment

To receive credit for college-level knowledge gained outside the classroom, you can document what you’ve learned in a portfolio that can be assessed for academic credit.

Decrease Your Costs and Time to Completion

By receiving credit for what you've learned through work experience, self-study, community service, continuing education, corporate training, MOOCs, and professional seminars, you may:

  • Reduce the number of courses you need to finish
  • Save money by minimizing your tuition costs
  • Finish your degree more quickly

Prior Learning - How It Works

How It Works

Learning portfolio assessment is offered by Excelsior College in partnership with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) through LearningCounts.org

When you create your portfolio, you'll match your knowledge to material covered in specific college courses. In addition to earning 3 credits for taking CCS 202: Prior Learning Assessment Theory and Practice, you may receive further credits through formal assessment. For more information, see the Portfolio Assessment Policy.

You can apply these credits to a degree program at Excelsior or transfer them to another school by placing them in a OneTranscript® record.

  1. Obtain your academic advisors approval to pursue the learning portfolio process and to take CCS 202: Prior Learning Assessment Theory and Practice.
  2. Register for, complete and pass Excelsior's online course CCS 202: Prior Learning Assessment Theory and Practice to learn how to evaluate your learning history and prepare a portfolio.
  3. During CCS 202, work with your Excelsior academic advisor to receive approval for the credits you will pursue through learning portfolio assessment.
  4. At the conclusion of CCS 202, submit your completed Learning Portfolio via LearningCounts.org.
