Alyson J. Breisch, of Durham, N.C., graduated from Excelsior (then Regents) College in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. Since then, many have benefited from her Excelsior education as she uses competency-based education models to teach patients and students. Breisch is president/owner of Breisch Heath Education PLLC, which provides consultation and education in faith community nursing, health ministries, clinical advancement, and nursing leadership. She also advances nursing excellence through mentoring and active participation in local, regional, and national organizations.
As an educator, Breisch has presented more than 700 lectures, courses, and workshops, including staff development, patient and family education, graduate-level nursing courses, and regional and national continuing education programs. She serves as director of practice and education on the national Health Ministries Association Board. Breisch also chaired the task force that worked with the American Nurses Association for the revision of the text, Faith Community Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd edition, published in 2012. She was instrumental in working with the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA) to form a Faith Community Nursing Council and serves on the council’s executive committee. Breisch is parish nurse at United Church of Chapel Hill, a congregation of 1,000 members with an active health ministry and support care team system.
The recipient of the Duke Medical Center’s Friends of Nursing Excellence in Cardiac Nursing Award, she was the first nurse selected as a distinguished lecturer for Duke’s Heart Center Distinguished Lecturer series. In 2010, she was named a lifetime member of the Health Ministries Association in recognition of her work with the ANA and as association program director.
She has a master’s degree in cardiovascular nursing from the University of Delaware and post-graduate certificates in Adult Nurse Practitioner and Health and Nursing Ministries, both from Duke University.
