About Excelsior University
Excelsior University is a private, not-for-profit institution of higher education based in Albany, New York, with an educational site in St. Petersburg, Florida. Excelsior was founded in 1971 with a mission to provide educational opportunity to adult learners with an emphasis on those historically underrepresented in higher education. With more than 200,000 alumni worldwide and approximately 12,000 current students, Excelsior offers 39 career-focused degree programs in the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s levels, in areas of business, health sciences, liberal arts, nursing, public service, and technology. Excelsior University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), with programmatic and specialized accreditation via the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), ABET, and International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE).
Both institutions are pioneers in distance and adult education, and share values rooted in student-centricity, social justice, and community.
Through the intended merger, Excelsior’s institutional infrastructure and curricular offerings can be complemented by Fielding’s strengths in graduate education in the social sciences. Disciplines and degrees offered by Fielding do not overlap with existing Excelsior programs, meaning Excelsior would gain new academic pathways – including doctorates – and lifelong learning opportunities for students. In addition, Fielding’s university press, professional centers, and international engagements could provide significant benefits to Excelsior’s students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
If realized, a merger will create extensive opportunities for learners across a range of degrees and disciplines. Combining Fielding’s expertise in graduate and doctoral education with Excelsior’s degree portfolio and leadership in online learning will open doors for learners and create pathways for career and professional advancement.
While much work remains to be done, signing this agreement moves us into the regulatory phase of the merger process and includes close cooperation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission, the American Psychological Association, and the U.S. Department of Education. The completion of the regulatory phase may take a year or longer and will occur in steps.
We are committed to transparency throughout this process, and we will share additional information as it becomes available. Refer to the FAQ below and direct additional questions to transformationalpartnerships@excelsior.edu.

Pursuing a Strategic Merger
While much work remains to be done, signing this agreement moves us into the regulatory phase of the merger process and includes close cooperation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission, the American Psychological Association, and the U.S. Department of Education. The completion of the regulatory phase may take a year or longer and will occur in steps. During this process, teams from Fielding and Excelsior will continue detailed planning to prepare for a possible integration that is as seamless as possible for our communities.
We will share updates and key milestones regularly as details progress and as we move through the necessary approval steps. As discussions move forward between the institutions and regulatory bodies, we will have a better idea of the timeline.
At the same time, both institutions have begun seeking various regulatory approvals required for the merger to move forward. This process may take a year or longer and will occur in steps.
Until the merger is final, Fielding continues to operate as a separate institution. Academic programs, student services, and University operations will continue largely the same.
Excelsior teams will work closely with human resources and leadership at Fielding to maintain culture and community throughout the process. Our institutions are closely aligned in values and methodology, our programs are complementary, and a partnership could provide enormous benefits to students, staff, and faculty of both institutions. By aligning with Fielding, we build on the Excelsior mission while also ensuring that Fielding’s legacy endures — with both institutions stronger and ready for the future.
One of Excelsior’s 2026-2028 key strategic goals is to “forge new, market-driven programs, locations, and partnerships.” An important pillar of this strategy is to explore mergers with institutions with complementary curricula, services, and values to broaden Excelsior’s programmatic portfolio and geographic presence. Fielding’s programs offer new pathways for Excelsior learners with no overlap in current Excelsior degree offerings, expanding Excelsior’s reach and portfolio while continuing Fielding’s legacy of excellence in psychology and behavioral sciences.
