Juneteenth commemorates enslaved people’s emancipation in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.To honor this important day, Excelsior University will be closed.

World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day is an international day organized every year on June 20 by the United Nations. It is designed to celebrate and honor refugees from around the world. The day was first established on 20 June 2001, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.

Pioneer Day

In the state of Utah, the Mormon pioneers are celebrated annually on July 24. Salt Lake City also has the Mormon Pioneer Memorial Monument, where Young, Eliza R. Snow, and other Mormon pioneers are buried and where a memorial exists dedicated to all who crossed the plains to the Salt Lake Valley.

Marcus Garvey Day

On August 17, Jamaicans celebrate Marcus Garvey Day. It honors a Jamaican-born political activist, orator, publisher, journalist and entrepreneur who fought for the rights of Afro-Jamaicans. Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887 in Saint Ann’s Bay to a stonemason and a domestic servant.

Senior Citizen’s Day

World Senior Citizen’s Day is celebrated on 21 August each year. The celebration took place for the first time in 1991 and is intended to increase awareness of the factors and issues that affect older adults, such as health deterioration and elder abuse.

Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.
