Description
The Criminal Justice system in the United States is in a time of crisis and reform is needed. This course examines some of the more important constitutional issues facing criminal justice practitioners today in order to create critical thinkers that can affect change. Case scenarios will be used to put the students in critical roles in the criminal justice system ranging from Chief of Police to Defense counsel. Students will be following the trial of an officer for police misconduct that resulted in the death of a suspect through the lens of the Constitution. Particular attention will be paid to the Amendments and the power and influence of the Supreme Court over whether they will be interpreted as pro-police or pro-defendant. Topics such as the roles of the courts in our judicial system, the powers entrusted to the separate branches of our government, 4th, 5th, 6th and 14th amendment's protections and issues faced by the various players in the criminal justice system will also be addressed.
