As AI tools rapidly evolve and become integrated into more platforms, many students are seeking clarity on how to navigate them in relation to their coursework and policies. Please note that Excelsior University's Academic Integrity Policy prohibits the use of generative AI in coursework unless explicitly allowed in the assignment instructions. For additional clarity on the Dos and Don'ts of AI use in your courses, please review the guidelines below. For any unclear situations, consult your instructor.

Expectations

  • Understand Assignment Guidelines: Confirm whether AI use is permitted before using it.
  • Ask for Guidance: If unsure, ask your instructor about appropriate AI use.
  • Use Excelsior University Resources: For research and writing help, use:
  • Submit Your Own Work: Assignments must reflect your own words, skills, and critical thinking.

General AI Acceptable vs. Unacceptable Uses

Writing Using built-in grammar or spell checkers (Word, Google Docs). Using AI tools to rephrase or rewrite text.
Using free Grammarly for spelling and grammar checks. Using Grammarly Pro or any feature that:

  • Requires prompts
  • Generates content
  • Rewrites your text
  • Mentions "AI" in its description
Asking AI for topic ideas or outline help. Submitting AI-generated outlines as your own.
Asking AI for help constructing a research search. Asking AI to conduct or summarize research. Use library and librarian support instead.
Math Using AI to review your reasoning after attempting problems yourself. Using AI to solve problems without understanding or attempting them.
Programming Looking up syntax or debugging help. Asking AI to write full code or solve entire tasks.
Spreadsheets and Data Getting AI tips on formulas or formatting. Having AI build full spreadsheets, dashboards, or models.
Labs and Technical Tasks Brainstorming ideas. Copying AI-generated work.
Understanding Complex Concepts Asking AI to simplify or explain complex ideas. Using AI to complete and submit work beyond your understanding.
