Program Modality Change

Students who are applying to Excelsior University will select a program modality option for their chosen degree program. Some degree programs may only offer one choice of program modality. Students may switch program modalities if they choose to (i.e. hybrid to asynchronous online). Students must speak with their academic advisor or admissions counselor prior to requesting program modality change. After the discussion, students will submit the Degree and Program Modality Transfer Request Form via the MyExcelsior page. Admissions requirements may vary by program and location.

Definitions of Program Modalities at Excelsior

  • Asynchronous (100% online) – Fully online program offerings with no live sessions
  • Synchronous (100% online)– Fully online program offerings with live synchronous sessions that students are required to attend
  • Low-Residency (1-24% in person) – Online program with face-to-face session(s) at a physical location 1/month, 1/term, OR 1/year for applied learning activities
  • Hybrid (25-99% in person) – 25-99% of the program sessions are offered in-person and the remaining are online
  • Face-to-Face (100% in person)– Program sessions occur in a physical location

Students enrolled in a hybrid program who wish to take additional asynchronous course sections must discuss this request with their academic advisor. Students may submit up to three such exception requests. If a student requests more than three asynchronous sections in place of the required hybrid sections, this will require a change in program modality to full asynchronous, in consultation with an academic advisor.
