Repeating Excelsior College Sources of Credit

Statement of Policy

A. Excelsior College Courses

Enrolled undergraduate students are allowed three attempts of the same course for which they have received an F (or D grade in core or professional component requirement).  Grades of I, W, AW, and MW are excluded from this policy.

Enrolled undergraduate nursing students who have failed the same nursing theory requirement three times will be academically dismissed from the nursing program. Prospective Associate Degree in nursing students who have failed the same nursing theory requirement three times or have earned a total of 6 “D” and/or “F” grades in the nursing theory series will be denied admission to the nursing program.

Associate Degree in Nursing students who earn a total of 6 “D” and/or “F” grades in the nursing theory series (courses, exams, nursing theory conference examinations) will be academically dismissal from the nursing program.  Effective for all new and re-enrollments on or after January 1, 2016. (Refer to Administrative Withdrawal and Academic Dismissal for further details).

Capstone courses – students who fail a capstone course three times will be academically dismissed from the degree program. The College will offer the student an opportunity to transfer to a different program within 60 days without charge. Failure to transfer will result in academic dismissal from the program and administrative withdrawal from the College.  (Refer to Administrative Withdrawal and Academic Dismissal for further details)

A course/capstone course cannot be repeated for a higher grade. If the student chooses to repeat a course/capstone course, it will not apply to the degree. Financial Student Aid (Title IV) can only pay for one such repeat.

Some Excelsior College degrees have time limits on the acceptance of courses/capstone courses. In such cases, the course(s)/capstone course can be repeated for the degree regardless of previous grade earned. Federal Student Aid (Title IV) can only pay for one such repeat.

B. Excelsior College Examinations in nursing theory, Nursing Theory Conference Examination, FCCA and CPNE

Enrolled undergraduate students are allowed 3 attempts on the same Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory, Nursing Theory Conference Examination, FCCA, or CPNE for which they have received an F (or D grade in Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory, Nursing Theory Conference Examination or FCCA). Students who take a combination of nursing theory courses, Excelsior College Examinations in nursing theory, and/or Nursing Theory Conference Examinations with the same title will have a maximum of 3 attempts between them. Grades of I, W, AW, and MW are excluded from this policy.

An Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory, Nursing Theory Conference Examination and the FCCA passing grade cannot be repeated for a higher grade. If the student chooses to repeat one of these requirements it will not apply to the degree.

Students, who fail an Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory or fail a nursing theory conference examination and want to take the same titled Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory, must wait one term (approximately 60 days) before repeating the examination and 2 terms (approximately 120 days) after failing the second attempt. An Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory can be taken no more than 3 times in a given year from the first time the student tested.

Applications for a fourth administration for an Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory will be rejected and returned to the examinee with a letter explaining the policy.

In the event that an examination is administered beyond the third time, the examinee’s grade will not be reported, or if the grade has already been reported, the grade will be invalidated. In the latter case, any credit granted by Excelsior College will be withdrawn, and examination registration fees will not be refunded.

Some Excelsior College degrees have time limits on the acceptance of Excelsior College Examinations in nursing theory, Nursing Theory Conference Examinations, FCCA, and CPNE. In such cases, the requirement can be repeated for the degree regardless of previous grade earned.

C. UExcel Examinations

Enrolled undergraduate students are allowed 4 attempts of the same UExcel examination for which they have received an F (or D grade in core or professional component requirement).

UExcel examinations with acceptable grades of C or higher cannot be repeated for a higher grade. If the student chooses to repeat a UExcel examination, it will not apply to the degree (See Grades Awarded and Accepted by Excelsior College in reference to D grades for examinations.)

Students, who fail a UExcel Examination, must wait one full term (approximately 60 days) before repeating the examination and two full terms (approximately 120 days) after the second attempt.

Applications for a fifth administration for an undergraduate examination will be rejected and returned to the examinee with a letter explaining the policy.

In the event that an examination is administered beyond the fourth time for any undergraduate examination, the examinee’s grade will not be reported, or if the grade has been reported, the grade will be invalidated. In the latter case, any credit granted by Excelsior College will be withdrawn, and examination registration fees will not be refunded.

Some Excelsior College degrees have time limits on the acceptance of UExcel examinations to meet degree requirements. In such cases, the requirement can be repeated for the degree regardless of previous grade earned.

NOTE: Repeating any Excelsior College source of credit will require students to pay all tuition and/or fees that are associated with repeating the requirement.

II. PROCEDURE
A. Repeating Excelsior College courses – The advisor will notify a student at the time of their evaluation when a grade of F is received (or D grade in core requirement). If it is the first F (D grade in core requirement) in the course the student will be notified that he/she can attempt the course 2 more times. If it is the third F (or D grade in core requirement) the student will be notified that he/she cannot take the course again. The student can work with their advisor to take a comparable course from another institution or take another Excelsior College course to meet the requirement. If a capstone course is failed 3 times, student is dismissed from the program. (Refer to Administrative Withdrawal and Academic Dismissal from a Program for further details.)

B. Repeating Capstone Course/Excelsior College Examination in nursing theory/ Nursing Theory Conference Examinations, FCCA or CPNE – The advisor will notify a student at the time of their evaluation when a grade of F is received. If it is the first F, the student will be notified that he/she can retake the course twice. If it is the third F the student will be notified that he/she cannot take the course again and will be academically dismissed from the degree program. The College will offer the student an opportunity to transfer to a different program within 60 days without charge. After 60 days, the student is administratively withdrawn from the College and is entitled to enroll in a different degree program, but will be required to submit a new enrollment form and pay the current multi-source fee. Nursing students are eligible to appeal to the dean of the School of Nursing to reenroll 5 years from the date of their dismissal from the nursing degree program. C. UExcel Examinations –. Students, who fail a UExcel Examination, must wait one full term (approximately 60 days) before repeating the examination and two full terms (approximately 120 days) after the second attempt. A UExcel examination can be taken no more than 3 times in a given year from the first time the student tested. The student is responsible for paying all tuition and/or fees associated with repeating a UExcel examination. After the fourth attempt, the student will be notified that he/she cannot take the examination again. The student can work with their advisor to take a comparable course from another institution or take another Excelsior College course/examination to meet the requirement.
