John Andonie

Retired Maj. Gen. John Andonie began his military career receiving a commission from the United States Military Academy in 1989. He served on active duty in the United States Army from May 1989 to October 2000. He subsequently joined the New York National Guard and remained with them until December 2020. In January 2021, Andonie moved to Washington, D.C. where he served as the deputy director of the Army National Guard. In September 2023, he assumed command of the D.C. National Guard where he remained until his retirement in October 2025.

Andonie served in command and leadership assignments at all levels from tactical to strategic level. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004-2005).

Andonie holds two master’s degrees. He has a master’s in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a master’s in strategic studies from the Army War College.

Andonie’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and seven Meritorious Service Medals. He is a recipient of the Order of St. George and the Order of St. Maurice.

He is a faculty member in Excelsior University’s School of Business and currently serves as a board member for the Rainbow Division Veterans Foundation and the West Point Society of the Capital District.
