Markus Baloney of Houston, Texas, earned an Associate of Science in Nursing in 2017. He shares, “I have obtained the following certifications: CEN, CCRN, and CFRN. I am currently in my dream role as a flight nurse and working towards the development of an online preceptor service. Excelsior Proud!”

Zachary Scovish, of Uncasville, Connecticut, earned an Associate of Science in Nursing in 2023. He shares, “After finally being awarded the chance to earn my Nursing degree, I have been working full time in a community hospital ED, and I have gone on to earn my BSN and obtain my CEN! On top of it all, I am actively working on commissioning in the United States Navy Reserve as a Nurse Corps officer!”

 

 

Benny Rosalin of Piti, Guam, earned a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts in 1995. He shares, “I am both an Army and Marine veteran. I am proud to have received my BS degree from Excelsior University. I am now employed at the office of the governor under community affairs as a staff assistant.”

Christopher Williams of Winston Salem, North Carolina, earned an Associate of Science in Nursing in 2013 and a Master of Science in 2019. He shares, “Excelsior opened so many doors for my career. From completing my ADN in ’13, to MSN in ’19, my career has taken so many steps forward. I have worked as a critical care nurse, nursing director, associate chief nurse, and currently work as a senior health care consultant for a large worldwide firm, using my nursing background to help health care systems improve operations for patient outcomes/experience. Excelsior has, long story short, opened many, many doors for me. I am forever grateful to this school for allowing me to become the health care leader and nurse that I am today.”

Louise Harmon of Battle Ground, Washington, earned a BS in Nursing in 2007. She shares, “I completed my initial Nursing degree (AAS Nursing) in 1974, and although I always found great jobs, I felt limited by a two-year degree. As a single parent raising three teenagers on my own, I realized a bachelor’s degree in Nursing would open doors to better opportunities and more pay, but returning to school seemed like an impossible feat. However, Excelsior’s program allowed me to complete my degree while continuing to work and raise my children. My BS in Nursing helped me to land a nurse case manager position, working for several different employers over a 20-year period. This month, I celebrate my 50th anniversary of being a RN, and yes-I still have an active license!”

Jonathon ‘Scot’ Crismon of Jefferson, Texas, earned a BS in Liberal Arts in 1991. He shares, “I received my degree with Excelsior (Regents) in the ‘90s while working full time. Soon after I would launch my professional career in software technology, and it has been a wonderful ride ever since.  I have been involved in tech startups and multinational corporations and eventually became the CTO of a division of Thomson Reuters. Now I enjoy the simpler path of providing consulting services to private equity and software companies trying to move to the web. Thank you, Excelsior, for helping me to get a Bachelor of Science and being a part of my career story.”

Ben Cunningham of Austin, Texas, earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1978. They share, “After coming home from Vietnam I was trying to finish my undergraduate degree at the University of Houston. I could not receive a language credit from U of H, so I went to the University of the State of New York (now Excelsior University) and was able to graduate. This led me to becoming a peace officer for several years. Following this, I went to law school, and was in law and mediation practice for the last 30 years. I also completed a master’s degree from the University of Philosophical Research. It has been a ride, but I am thankful for Excelsior (and the University of the State of New York). I have been on many legal boards, have published books, articles, and more. Onward and upward at the age of 75 and still learning.”

Reed Markham of Mount Dora, Florida, earned an Associate of Science in 1980 and Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts in 1982. Medgar Reid of Wahiawa, Hawai’i, earned a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts in 1995. He shares his professional bio with the Excelsior community: “After more than 30 years as a professional chaplain/director of spiritual care and chaplaincy services for many health care organizations – including the 10,000+ employee University of Maryland Medical System – Dr. Medgar L. Reid serves as executive professional visionary dreamer with his Hawaiian holding company Brassri Samadhi, LLC, established in October 2021. He is an active full voting ordained clergy member with The Historic Kawaiaha’o Church in Honolulu, Hawai’i, founded in 1820. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Quantum Consciousness Studies from The Luxor Institute (1999) and Doctor of Divinity degree in Systematic Theology from Family Bible Institute, College, Seminary & University (2012) and a Master of Divinity degree from Saint Mary’s Seminary & University Ecumenical Institute and United Baptist College & Seminary (1996) and a Bachelor of Science degree from Coppin State University and Excelsior University (1995). Jeri Hallberg Harmon of El Paso, Texas, earned a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts in 2000. She shares, “I was eligible for graduate school, received increased pay, and completed my master’s program. This allowed me to enter the University Teacher Alternative Certification program. I taught Medical Assisting students and was in charge of all nonclinical basic college classes, enabling medical assisting students to obtain their Allied Health degrees. From 2013 to 2016, I served on the Texas State Advisory Board for the Training and Certification of Community Health Workers, representing Health Regions 9 and 10 in far west Texas. I created after-school programs focused on STEM, Aerospace, and Aviation for children at Krupp and Sandoval public housing units. As the community liaison for at-risk youth in El Paso, Texas, I implemented the Sebring Aviation and Life Skills program, which ensured students’ reading and math levels increased by one to three grade levels within eight weeks. An additional one-year mentorship and guidance program for school success followed the initial eight weeks. Comparative baseline and program finish Texas Assessment of Basic Education (TABE) results proved skill levels increased as predicted. Additionally, I implemented and completed the MCEC and Texas Education Agency Purple STAR school designation for Harmony School of Innovation. Thanks, Excelsior! God bless all our military.”

Michael Stevens of Arlington, Virginia, earned a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts in 2015. He shares, “Dear Excelsior University, I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the pivotal role your institution played in helping me achieve one of the most significant milestones in my life – the completion of my bachelor’s degree. As a student who grew up in a small town in western Montana, the path to higher education was not readily available to me after high school. Following my graduation, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1983, where I served for 33 1/2 years. In 2012, I made the decision to pursue my college degree as a means to lead by example and show my fellow sailors that it is never too late to chase after one’s dreams. This decision was fueled by a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of education and the desire to inspire those around me to reach for their goals. Marilyn Hau of Avon Park, Florida, earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1989. She shares, “I had to work as a diploma RN to pay for my BSN from Regents – although not accredited yet, it was the only option that long ago. Thank you for what turned out to be the best decision of my life. I moved into occupational health nursing, then got my master’s in Environmental Health and Safety Management from the University of Findlay, Ohio. After independent consulting and a corporate safety manager position, I was appointed the EHS director at the University of Illinois at Chicago with a six-figure salary. I retired from that position with an excellent retirement annuity income.
