This course is intended to help you develop an understanding of the process of identifying, measuring, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating information in pursuit of an organization's goals. Description

For any manger, a knowledge of the costs of the business can mean the difference between the long-term survival of the organization or business failure. And with around half of all businesses in the USA no longer existing after 5 years (Gallup, 2014), an ability to understand and accurately access costs is a vital pre-requisite to long term growth and business development.

Develop an understanding of the attributes of cost behavior, cost accumulation systems and techniques, management planning and control systems, relevant cost information for short-term decision-making and accounting data in long-term capital budgeting decisions. Includes detailed coverage of cost-volume-project analysis; job order and process costing including spoilage, budgeting, standard costing and variance analysis; absorption and variable costing; relevant costs; and capital budgeting.

This is a 3-credit course, requiring a minimum of 18 hours of course engagement each week in an 8-week term, or 9 hours per week in a 15-week term (refer to the Credit Hours Calculation Policy in the Student Handbook), Course engagement includes such activities as discussions, reading, study time, and assignments.

Description
The course will cover an in depth examination of financial report disclosures, with an emphasis on how firms use financial reporting to achieve such ends as managing earnings or keeping debt off of the balance sheet. By the end of the course, students will have an appreciation for what information is missing from the primary financial statements, the knowledge to understand the content of important footnotes, and the tools to conduct financial analyses using the information contained therein. The course will use a combination of textbook problems, case studies, and most importantly, actual financial report disclosures. This course investigates the role and value of accounting information for users as they make business decisions. It includes a review of the generally accepted accounting principles and assumptions underlying the basic accounting model that generates the financial statements. Alternate Dispute Resolution

Description
The ability to work toward a consensus and reduce potential conflicts in a variety of contexts is of utmost importance in today s society. This course provides an overview of mediation processes, based upon conflict resolution theory. Students will learn a variety of communication and negotiation skills, in order to settle disputes outside of a courtroom setting. Students will learn how diversity impacts mediation, as well as examine the ethical issues faced by mediators and their disputants. ADR671 Mediation Cross-listed with BUS 671. Description
Examine bison on cave walls, marvel at the Greek ideal of beauty, glimpse Byzantine splendor, and feel the pathos of medieval piety. We explore Western art from its earliest known forms, dating as far back as 30,000 BCE, to the beginnings of civilization in Mesopotamia and Egypt. We will look at the Mediterranean cultures of the ancient Aegean, Greece, and Rome and the religious visual expressions of the Middle Ages, including spectacular Gothic cathedrals. The course will help you see how art reflects culture through discussions, analytic writing, and an acquired familiarity with great specific examples from each period.

This course will empower students to look at and understand Western art from the time of the Renaissance to the early 20th century, covering painting, sculpture, and architecture. It focuses on the power of perception and visual storytelling so that students become engaged with specific art examples from each period and culture. Students will analyze famous works by Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Vincent Van Gogh, and many more brilliant artists. By developing a sophisticated eye, students will learn how artworks reflect their cultural origins and their individual creators, who give shape and meaning to their art. By the end of the course, students will be surprised at their recognition and knowledge of art that they see operating in American culture now.

Description

Biology is the study of life and this course is an introduction to the study of life and life processes at the college level. The topics covered in this course include: the scientific method, the chemistry and processes necessary for life, cells and cellular organization, energy production, evolution and natural selection. You also examine reproduction and the applications of biological principles to everyday experiences.

In this comprehensive introductory course in microbiology, students are introduced to cellular microbes, such as bacteria, protists, fungi, and helminthes, and non-cellular microbes, such as viroids, viruses, and prions and how they are classified. In addition, students explore the impact of these microbes on the environment, human health, and society. Introduction to Microbiology covers the biological and biochemical foundations and scientific methods necessary to understand microbial growth and metabolism and provides a historical perspective by reviewing the major scientific contributions that led to modern-day microbiology.

This is an 8-week format. If you have experienced 15-week formats, you can expect the 8-week format to be nearly double the workload of a 15 week format.

Description
This is a course designed for students in the Natural Science major and those who are interested in the sciences with a strong background in biology.  There is a laboratory activity integrated into the course and it will be counted as an upper level lab experience. This course explores the history of the Theory of Evolution from the work of Charles Darwin to modern day evolutionary studies using the latest technologies such as gene mapping, proteomics, epigenetics, and DNA analysis. Students will explore examples of evolution for a variety of species and follow the evolutionary pathway for one particular species as a final project. This course is reading and writing intense but has all the reading materials available within the modules and the EC Library. No textbook purchase is required for this course.  This course requires a video presentation as well as a final paper.

Description

Scientists have stated that we are experiencing the sixth mass extinction of biological diversity since the Earth formed and that we may well be in a new geological age, the Anthropocene Epoch. Through readings and numerous activities, this course examines the rise and fall of biological diversity over time through the study of ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. Topics include the meaning and value of biodiversity, major threats to species and ecosystems, and efforts to conserve, manage, and sustain biological diversity.

In addition, as science and technology are now at the heart of every aspect of the global economy, a wide range of employers hire workers with courses and degrees in the Natural Sciences. Employers such as JP Morgan Chase, the National Institutes of Health, environmental businesses, law firms, and the health care industry, hire workers with degrees including courses like this. Recent advances in molecular tools have allowed developmental biologists to explore the genetic mechanisms that result in the diversity found in nature. In this course you will learn about the development of living organisms from the gene to the ecosystem levels. This multidisciplinary course encompasses plant physiology, plant biochemistry and plant molecular biology. Additionally, the course bridges the traditional Botany and Plant Biochemical Sciences in exploring the role of plants in new biotechnology. The course will examine plant reproduction, plant cell biology and genetics. The course will delve into the diversity, function, and adaptation mechanisms of plants. Topics include an introduction to plant community structure with focus on the impact of plants on the environment. Additionally, the course will examine the relationships between plants and other organisms as well as how plants cope in their environments, and plant-human interactions. Recent advances in plant biotechnology will also be covered, including disease management strategies, genetic modification of plants and the impact these biotechnologies have on both the environment and humans.

Although women have made inroads as managers and leaders, they still continue to lag their male counterparts in reaching the executive suites and boardrooms of many major organizations around the globe. This study will examine a number of theories and findings looking at the roadblocks women continue to face in their quest for upward mobility, as well as offering insight into how women are gaining access to upper management. Topics covered will include 1) the economic strength of women as a market, 2) an examination of the status of women in the United States compared with other countries, 3) obstacles faced by women such as the glass ceiling, nonlinear career paths, and work/life/family balance, 4) the importance of attracting and retaining talented women, and 5) leadership styles and traits of women.

Description

What roles does financial management plan in an organization? What information does financial statements provide? How do we value an asset? These are some of the questions that this introductory course in finance will help you answer. We will explore topics that focus on financial tools that are available to aid business managers in decision making. Topics covered include, financial statement analysis, time value of money, asset valuation and capital budgeting.

This is a 3-credit course, requiring a minimum of 18 hours of course engagement per week in an 8-week term, or 9 hours per week in a 15-week term (refer to the Credit Hours Calculation Policy in the Student Handbook). Course engagement includes such activities as discussions, reading, study time, assessment and assignments.

In this course, we'll examine and analyze global business in its historical, theoretical, environmental, and functional dimensions. Our focus will be on understanding the growing economic interdependence of nations and the impact of that interdependence on managerial and corporate policy decisions that transcend national boundaries.

This course will also provide an introduction to globalization and the cultural, economic, political, and legal environments of international business, including an overview of risks, challenges, and opportunities of competing in the global marketplace.

Why does the United States have the highest premature rate of returning repatriates? Does having a diversity management program in an organization increase expatriates staying on assignment? This course focuses on the human resource challenges in recruitment, selection, training and evaluating expatriates performance that impact the success of the organization and expatriate, challenges that are often far beyond the scope of the traditional "personnel" function. Problems, challenges and decisions are analyzed from the point of view of the human resource professional and organization president. You will analyze human resource practices in the global environment, including work visas, labor laws, employment-related taxation and expatriate contracts for pre-departure, while on assignment and for repatriation. A family systems approach will be taken in this course, with attention paid to accompanying mates/spouses and children on an expatriate assignment. Each year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reports the number of complaints of harassment and discrimination they receive due to protected categories, including: national origin, race, color, sex, genetic information, sexual harassment, age, disability, pregnancy, and retaliation. These complaints were not successfully resolved by employers. This course explores the way legislation directs and regulates the relationship between an employer and employee. Description

During the last two years​, ​the world has seen unprecedented growth in distributed employees as a consequence of COVID-19. Distributed workforces use a variety of telecommunication networks and tools to establish connectivity as well as provide organizational policies and procedures, email​, and interactive meetings. Distributed teams encompass organizations that (1) offer flexible work arrangements and whose employees work out of home offices rather than on-site​; and (2) have employees who are geographically distant. Employers have acknowledged that managing distributed employees is different than managing employees on-site, noting ​that it is difficult to keep employees engaged and connected. Thus, distributed workplaces have created challenges to organizational behavior. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that the need for managers who know how to manage distributed employees is growing at a faster-than-average rate. Research has suggested that when strategically planned and implemented, distributed work programs increase productivity, increase job satisfaction, increase loyalty, ease work-life integration​, and reduce employee stress and burnout.    

This course will offer management and leadership strategies that will contribute to the success of organizations, including distributed organizations.  You will discover how individual differences impact organizations, learn how to apply management and leadership skills to specific situations, apply proper business ethics, and examine how culture plays a role in today s global business world.

Research has indicated that employee training is important in an organization because it allows employees to improve their skills and improve the quality of work they are providing to the organization. Furthermore, training is an essential part of every employer s safety and health program. Training protects employees from work-related injuries, but also improves productivity, performance, and morale. In addition, training in equal employment opportunity, including sexual harassment and race discrimination, is also required by law.

In 2020 the world has seen an unprecedented growth in distributed employees as a consequence of COVID-19. Distributed workforces use a variety of telecommunication networks and tools to establish connectivity as well as provide organizational policies and procedures, email and interactive meetings. Distributed teams encompass organizations that (1) offer flexible work arrangements and whose employees work out of home offices rather than on site and (2) have employees who are geographically distant. 

This course will provide an overview of facilitating training programs in a virtual environment. We will address adult learning principles involved in the design of virtual training, strategies for engaging employees during training, the use of training methods for synchronous and asynchronous learning, and ways to assess the effectiveness of the training program.

This course introduces students to the impact of big data on various industries. Students will explore the growth of data via the Internet of Things (IoT) and will explore various strategies being used within industry to utilize data to improve decision making. Description
Like it or not, social media, digital communication, and smartphones are rapidly altering how we relate to one another in our personal and professional lives. Do social, economic, and cultural conditions that define our lives in the real world follow us online? Do our online actions increasingly shape our offline identities? This class will explore how social forces such as race, gender, and culture affect digital communication, while also exploring related topics of workplace communication, issues of privacy, unconscious bias, and internet celebrities. Global differences, too, will be considered. Many groups within the United States, and many countries internationally, have significantly less access to new media than others. In addition, online activism has raised millions of dollars for causes big and small, and so we ll examine some of the pros and cons of changing the world digitally. Lastly, we ll also investigate controversial behaviors like sexting, trolling, transhumanism, and terrorism online. Because having knowledge and practical skills of new media makes students more marketable, the class includes practical assignments with real world application.

This course will examine the complex relationship between innovation, culture, and communication. How do innovations in communication drive cultural change? How does culture communicate its innovations? Television was a powerful agent of transformation, and we are now seeing how online platforms are changing lives and cultures. In addition, visual images, popular music, fashion, and many more are also forms of innovative communication that we ll be exploring. Communication within a culture can establish and maintain power structures, but it is also used as a tool of protest, resistance, and democracy. In other words, communication can be a great equalizer within a culture, especially as innovation allows average citizens to utilize new, potentially powerful platforms.  Awareness of communication is an important skill in life and at the workplace because every day we are forced to interpret the cultural behaviors and visual messages that surround us.

Provides a comprehensive review and in-depth analysis of the rules of evidence and criminal procedural law in the United States. Gangs continue to scourge the American criminal justice system. Since the 1990s street gangs have multiplied in number and are no longer simply an inner-city problem. The nationwide effort to manage this enigma is far reaching beyond just criminal justice professionals. The problem is a complex one that is far reaching into the homes of every citizen in every community. This course is designed to assist students in developing an understanding of what a street gang is, provide an overview of the historical and contemporary street gang, and examine efficacy of some past and current methods used to address their influence. Particular attention will be devoted to gang types, diversity, theoretical explanations as well as an analyze the responses, intervention and prevention strategies, and public policy issues. The content in this course is mature and may be disturbing. Explores the historical development and contemporary structure of state and federal trial courts and courts of appellate review.
